SS 304 vs SS 316 Hinges: Which Grade Do You Need?

SS 304 and SS 316 are both austenitic stainless steels and look nearly identical on delivery — the difference only becomes obvious after years of exposure to moisture, salt, or industrial chemicals. Choosing the wrong grade for the environment is the single most common cause of premature hinge corrosion complaints in export orders.

SS 304 contains roughly 18% chromium and 8% nickel. It offers strong general corrosion resistance and is the standard choice for interior doors, dry-climate exteriors, and most residential and commercial applications. It's also more cost-effective, which is why it remains the default grade for the majority of butt hinges, cupboard hinges, and tubular latches shipped for inland projects.

SS 316 adds 2–3% molybdenum to that composition. Molybdenum dramatically improves resistance to chloride pitting — the specific type of corrosion caused by salt air, seawater splash, and de-icing chemicals. This makes SS 316 the correct specification for coastal buildings, marine hardware, swimming pool enclosures, and any project within a few kilometers of a coastline.

For our export markets, this distinction matters a great deal. Coastal cities across the UAE (Dubai, Abu Dhabi), and humid tropical ports in Vietnam and Kenya (Mombasa) see far higher chloride exposure than inland cities. We default all Middle East and coastal export shipments to SS 316 or passivated stainless steel specifically because SS 304 hardware in these environments can show visible surface pitting within 12–18 months, while SS 316 routinely performs well past a decade in the same conditions.

The cost difference between the two grades is typically 15–25% at the raw material level, which is a small premium relative to the cost of a warehouse full of door hardware failing early and needing replacement under warranty. If your project sits within roughly 10km of a coastline, in a high-humidity tropical zone, or involves any exposure to industrial fumes or chlorinated water, specify SS 316. For everything else, SS 304 remains the sensible, cost-effective standard.
